Social Media and Mental Distress #causeachatter #mentalhealth #pebbleinwaterswrites @blogchatter

If you are pre 90s born, probably you had your childhood free of Internet and social media fever. But, if your birth year is in 90s or later, you were born with a smartphone in your hands, eyes on the screen, and fingers toggling between Facebook and Instagram. As a matter of fact, wherever or whenever you started your Internet and social media journey, if currently you are spending more than 50% of your waking hours on social media, and, you go blank or clueless without it, then you are either in a big trouble already, or are heading towards it for sure. Is social media pushing you towards mental distress? Lucky are those who have tasted the flavor of life with no interference of Internet. Once internet came into our lives, it completely changed our lifestyles and perspective towards life, family, friends, social, and what not.

According to Wikipedia - "Mental distress (or psychological distress) is a term used, by some mental health practitioners and users of mental health services, to describe a range of symptoms and experiences of a person's internal life that are commonly held to be troubling, confusing or out of the ordinary." Is excessive indulgence online on social media platforms harmful in increasing mental clutter? Or is normal? Or the new normal? Does it hamper self esteem? It's not about wait and watch long term consequences. It's already visible. Multiple studies and researches have indicated that there is a direct connection between heavy usage of social media and suicidal tendencies leave aside isolation, loneliness, depression, anxiety among many such behaviors. It's proven that people spending too much time on social platforms are prone to stay away from real life relations and realities. That is how their journey towards mental distress begins.

For those, the inadequacies in their life and appearance fluctuate on the basis of responses they get in the virtual world they have created online. Their mood goes off and on depending on the same factors. Life becomes completely insecure and inconsistent. There is something called FOMO, fear of missing out that compels a person to pick up phone every few seconds in order to check statuses or respond to every alert. These actions lead to sleeplessness, mental distress, indecisiveness, and a lot of other things. Many years back, an interviewer asked the great Indian cricketer Kapil Dev how he could create a record of zero no balls in his entire career. He answered very humbly - "I always know where my line is. " So, as long as we know where our line is while spending time on social platforms, we can stay healthy.

The gunman was killed later by Orlando police after a 3-hour fight. Around 60 persons were injured during Orlando shooting. Omar Mateen, 29, an American, born to Afghan parents is identified as the assailant. He was a regular visitor of the nightclub and is supposedly having links with ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) though CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) has not been able to find any links between Mateen and ISIL.

Schumer, deeply shocked by the tragic shooting in Orlando in a homophobic mass attack has decided to cut a scene from the movie that involves gun firing at others by a person. The age-old debate is always there whether movies inspire criminals or real-life crime stories inspire movies. Though the details of the scene that is cut are not very much clear but definitely it is in line with the expectation by the whole world to curb violence and killing of innocent people all across the globe. Terrorism has been increasing like an unstoppable virus that needs to be curbed at the earliest.

#FairStart A Public Advocacy Campaign by UNICEF for Every Child

Every child on this earth has a right to get enough opportunities for a #FairStart in his or her life. Usually the real talent of a child gets burried along with his or her wishes in order to fulfill the wishes of his parents, or bend under circumstances and surrender to the situations. UNICEF India is already doing so much for the children, society and various other causes in the country. The same is being done at a larger scale worldwide by the global group UNICEF. UNICEF India launched 'Fair Start' campaign for the purpose of bringing awareness to the society and social media about persisting inequities that large chunk of children in India face that affects their survival, growth and development. The 'Fair Start' film showcases these factors through various angles. The film aims to get an insight into the lives of millions of children coming from different walks of life and having different backgrounds.

#FairStart campaign and 'Fair Start' film wants to elaborate the life of million of children who don't get enough chances in life to show their real talent hidden inside and who are full of potential but are devoid of grow up healthy, happy, and safe. These children have least chances of attending school due to their circumstances and situations. And hence they are less likely to learn, and have high chances of getting married as children. Most of these children are forced to forget their childhood at a very early stage and get engaged in some kind of work in order to earn money.

#FairStart is a drive. It is a mission. It seeks involvement from every element of the society. Every person has to contribute from whichever segment he or she belongs to. After all, everyone has a responsibility towards the children of the nation. Introducing this noble mission and showing the film, Caroline Den Dulk, Chief, Advocacy & Communication, UNICEF India emphasized every child of the country, or rather on this earth, deserves a fair start in his/her life and has an equal right for adequate nutrition, safety, education, psychological and physical protection, sanitation, and health care. The campaign is launched with its primary goal to draw attention to the lives of the children who are deprived of these fundamental and basic rights, usually at times determined simply by where they are born.

#FairStart campaign and Fair Start film tries to convey the message that every child should have a fair and equal chance in life without any consideration of their caste, gender, ethnicity, poverty, religion, or region. The drive in this regard is gaining momentum for last many years as UNICEF is working closely with the Government of India and many other associates to improve the condition of the most vulnerable and deprived children with an aim to ensure that each child born in this vast and complex country gets the best beginning of his life, and gets all possible favorable conditions to develop to his or her full potential.

Every child has a right for a #FairStart. As of now, more than 6 million children in India are out-of-school as per a study conducted by SRI-IMRB for Ministry of HRD, Government of India, in 2014. Census 2011 data says more than 10 million children are engaged in work in the country.. 2013 Report of Sample Registration System shows almost 3500 children die on a daily basis before reaching age 5. A data from RSOC 2013-14 shows 42 percent of tribal children in India are stunted during their growth and development. UNICEF-WHO Joint Monitoring Report 2015 data shows almost half of the population of India which is around 570 million people still practice open defecation. Another data from Census + RSOC 2013-14 states that although girls in India deserve an equal chance in life, but on an average more than 2 million girls marry early every year in the country. Another research shows based on a report by NFHS3 that more than 23% girls between 15-19 years of age experience physical or sexual violence during some point of time.

#FairStart A Public Advocacy Campaign by UNICEF for Every Child

Den Dulk said that mostly such issues faced are severly complex in nature and cut across all layers of society. There is a tremendous change in mindset required to make changes happen in real life. Merely listening to or observing these stastitics or attending these talks or conclaves will not suffice the purpose. The #FairStart campaign comes with a serious purpose of engaging the largest possible chunk of public in a debate and conversation for everyone to see they have a role to play to ensure every child can have a fair chance in life.

The 'Fair Start' film has been produced with the participation of a group of children who have joined bringing their own daily life into the film. The film has been made with a lot of love by the team and they hope everyone likes it. What they need in return is a small portion of help from everybody to get a fair start, life. Every child deserves a #FairStart. Abhishek De, Avant Garde Films feels emotionally that the #FairStart campaign was quite an oustanding and glorious project to work on for him, as well as the entire team at Avant Garde Films. The most memorable thing he remembers was working with such wonderful kids from 'Bigger Than Life' NGO. The children played cast and crew really well. For De, and he is sure for everyone who was a part of this prestigious project, it would be the best memorable experience and will be close to everybody's heart forever.

The crew included wonderful kids like Sahil, Cameraman, Suraj, Art Director, Shawn, Cameraman/ Director, and Belinda, Costume. The kids are just 14, 10, 15, and 13 respectively and have come from very diversified backgrounds. Suraj, for instance, has 3 sisters and 2 brothers. The only earning member in the family is their mother who works very hard selling corn. Suraj doesn't mind helping his mother at her work. His father is an alcoholic and fights at home. He wants to become a scientist.

Sahil has a mother and a sister. His father passed away 3 years back. He helps his uncle in laundry work. He goes to an English medium school and wants to become a cricketer when he grows up. Shawn has 6 siblings. His father has left home and mother keeps unwell. That is why he is not able to go to school as he has taken up the responsibility to work and earn money for his home. He loves playing football and yearns to go to school. Belinda is Shawn's younger sister. She goes to a municipal school. She is very shy and wants to become and office accountant. She works at home after school hours.

You must watch this inspiring movie below:

Please do share the movie, the cause #FairChance and contribute in whatever shape you can to build the children of our nation stronger. Let every child get a #FairChance at an appropriate stage of life.

Women Discrimination Highlighted In Australian Media by Women In Media

Women discrimination and sexual harassment in Australian Media

Women discrimination a major concern in Australian Media

Women discrimination resulting from sexual abuse in Australian Media

Women discrimination and sexual harassment have been highlighted in Australian media. IT is a major concern. There is sexual harassment and abuse and we are talking about women empowerment all across the globe. Women’s Day is just a day away. All efforts are in vain till we don’t achieve gender equality. More than 50% women who work in Australian media have reported bullying, exploitation or sexual harassment. This is the result of a landmark survey reported recently in a news. Out of the women who confirmed to be the victim, more than 40% confirmed it happened on social media where they engage with their audiences. The cases of bullying, harassment, and abuse stretched from mild to severe. In some of the cases reported there were even death threats and similar serious intimidations.
A number of women working in Australian media had to either put a halt to their career or change their profession because of increasing women discrimination. The survey was part of the Mates over Merit - a report on the women working in media organized by the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA). Almost a thousand Australian media professional women were surveyed during the last quarter of the previous year. The situation is stated not to be healthy in this field. Merits are shadowed by mates, sexual harassment and abuse are overlooked, salary gaps are widening based on gender and a lot more instances like this.

Women in new and media are facing serious impacts of women discrimination. The gender bias is increasing, resulting in frustration in Australian media. There are no visible efforts seen in improvements. The progress is almost negligible. Although the ratio of women working in media is increasing, but so is the number of such cases. Hope to see some improvement in this area. Maybe Australian government can look around and find out some solutions to relieve women from sexual harassment.

Before releasing railways budget 2016, Suresh Prabhu was seen on Periscope in the morning. He was having a breakfast chat with a large number of audience in real-time. The session was to set expectations from this year’s budget. These are few steps taking India from the status of a developing country to a developed country.

Chris Rock is Best Prepared For Oscars 2016

Chris Rock will have a good balance of humour and politics during Oscars 2016

Chris Rock would be hosting the biggest event of the year Oscars 2016

Coming Sunday is the D-day for Chris Rock

Chris Rock is a stand-up comedian. He was part of Saturday Night Live (SNL). He has hosted Academy Awards. His journey of hosting on big occasions began in 2005. He must be balancing his wits, humour and all wisdom about Hollywood for the Oscars 2016. Oscars will be held this Sunday. It is quite an honour for him to host the event. He is probably the best choice. Nobody else would have fitted the bill. He is perfect in humour, talking about varied acts of current day politics, and handling it wittingly in a balancing manner. He has become the first choice in show business. He would be touching some sensitive issues of the politics, race relations in the country and throwing some inside stories. He is 51. There is a shout in the show business about nomination of 20 all-white actors this year. Chris Rock is a black.

So far, Chris Rock has not criticised it openly. He might not do it directly. But he will definitely take it up in his own style. And he will do it during the show, on the stage, while hosting it. More than 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences vote on the Oscars. There has always been a concern of shortfall of women and minorities in its ranks. It is reportedly taken up seriously this year. The count of women and minorities is to be doubled in the duration of next four years. No doubt that it is golden opportunity to take up this issue now. The best occasion for this is the prestigious and big stage of the Oscars. Most of the world would be watching it live. Estimated number of TV viewers is around 50 million in America. There would be millions of people in addition to this, watching Oscars 2016 from other parts of the world.

This is a big task in front of Chris Rock. But he is smart enough to manage it in a graceful manner.

Why Men Judge Women Based On Their Looks?

Why Men’s judgement of women is based on their looks?

Why should women bother about other’s judgement?

There is a deep impact on women’s growth and progress when men judge women based on their looks.

A recent study by Nielsen India conducted on behalf of Nihar Naturals reveals that almost 75% of women confirmed facing more judgements on their looks and clothes than the non-working. Why men judge women based on their looks? ? Is it a sheer pastime or a deeply rooted syndrome on men’s part? Why would men be interested focusing on what women wear or how they look rather than their work potential and talent? Is it merely a gimmick to downgrade and deviate women at work? Is it a well-planned tactics to oppress women so that they don’t excel in their career and leave men behind? Is there a deep psychological reason behind this? Is it planted in a man’s mind right at his childhood to play this kind of tactics in all walks of life? Is it taught a woman right at her childhood to stay focused on what men think and talk about her rather than build herself and career? After all, why should a woman bother about men’s judgement on her looks and appearance? Why be it on the top of her priority list to ensure whatever she does in life has to be in line with a focus on pleasing men around her?

Why Men Judge Women Based On Their Looks?
Photo credit: Hamed Saber via Visualhunt / CC BY
Around 1/3rd of the women confirmed that that maximum number of judgements on them come from the men from their family, extended family and friends rather than it coming from strangers. More than half of the women who were part of this survey agreed that the judgements passed on them have a deeper impact on their life. It impacts so hard that their abilities to reach their actual calibre get shrunk. When around 70% of men opined that their judgement of women is entirely on the basis of their looks, it reflects there is a contagious and universal fault in our system. Who is to be blamed for this? Is it woman as a mother who teaches her children about this? Is it our male dominated society that doesn't want to lose their reigns and just out of fear of this ensure keep this virus intact? Are we living in a sick society? How to address this global issue is a point to ponder.

The facts that are revealed are not merely based on experience but statistics. The statistics have come out on the basis of the survey conducted on real men and women of the society. Imagine if we were free of this sickness, how far women would have reached with their true potential? In fact, the growth of a woman always impacts on the growth of a family. That, in turn, has a further impact on society. A country’s overall growth depends on how soon we kill this virus and make our country and world disease free.

Why Do People Judge Others Based On Their Looks And Appearance

Judging others on the basis of their looks and appearance has a deep impact.

Soceity is to be blamed for causing long term negative impact by judging others on what they look like

The biassed judgement of women is more based on their looks rather than their work

Have you ever wondered if we had a judgement free society it would have created more powerful personalities. It is more about the judgement of women based on their looks that impact them heavily in their life and career. When people judge others based on their looks and appearance, it becomes a different ball game altogether. It becomes a chain reaction. Right from childhood when you have to adjust yourself on the basis of others judgement on your looks and appearance, it starts a very painful journey. It is no surprise that the whole society can be divided into two main sections. One section comprises of people who treat it as their birthright to judge others based on their looks and appearance. The other section comprises of more intellectual people who understand the gravity of matter thus avoid judging others based on their looks. It is better if you are judged by others based on what you do rather than what you wear.

Why Do People Judge Others Based On Their Looks And Apperance
Photo credit: Tramidepain via Visual hunt / CC BY-NC-SA
A child’s mind get totally diverted when someone in the family or society starts taunting on the basis of how he looks. The whole focus of the life gets changed. It becomes the first priority of your life to justify other’s judgement. You get diverted from the realistic goals of your life while doing this. And when it is a girl, the situation worsens. Then she starts focusing and worrying about her looks, appearance and presentability rather than the bigger goals of her life like education and career. Her style, choice of clothes and appearance gets centric towards a singular goal which is to get a good judgement from others on how she looks like. This is a process that is inherited generation to generation. When you get tortured in your childhood because of this, you develop a personality to do the same with others when you grow. That starts a chain reaction and the whole society gets impacted due to this. What if a girl worries more on how will she be perceived on the basis of her looks rather than her talent and knowledge in the school? This appearance and looks become her priority number one and this starts impacting her focus on learning. The learning curve starts getting deteriorated. This, in turn, impacts her whole life. Is judging others on their looks and appearance, not a disease? Is it not some kind of bullying?

The pressure it builds can cause many harmful results. Why have you to worry about your looks just to please others? Nihar Naturals #IAmCapable survey brings out some startling results. The survey was conducted by Nielsen India on their behalf. The survey was conducted on men and women to find out these results. Only less than 30% women disagree that working women have to pass through more volume of judgements on their looks or what they wear. It definitely becomes quite challenging for them to focus on pleasing their colleagues rather than taking work as a top most priority. This starts causing a negative impact on their work, freedom and lifestyle.
