Women Empowerment #CauseAChatter #pebbleinwaterswrites

Women empowerment is a problem too, so is the solution.  One thing is true.  Half of the people in the world who speak or write in favor of women empowerment do not actually want to see this happening.  And the other half don't know what it means, or its possible solutions.  In fact, the moment a woman starts thinking that her only real job is to please a man, she takes herself a step down.  On the other hand, the moment a man tries to convince a woman that the woman is always behind or below the man, and a woman accepts it silently, the decline of our society begins there and then only at that very moment.  The society in which women are given a high status and respect, that society progresses on the right path with ten times the strength and momentum.

Woman has that power which no one else in this world has.  It's her strength and power of being a mother. No man can beat that strength and power. The status of mother is considered above even God.  So in such a situation, it would be a big mistake and unwise to wrongly assess the power of a woman, to make her feel inferior, or to consider her weaker.  It is because of a woman, that this world exists.   How would the world progress if there were no women?  In such a situation, if a woman thinks that she has to be equal to a man, then this is also wrong.  Because woman is already above any man right from the beginning, in every respect.  Now if we talk about family, society, and country, then women should be given equal rights in terms of respect, status, and opportunity, in every house.

Actually,  it should start happening in every part of the society. As nothing will happen with empty feelings and showy slogans.  It is put in the mind of the child from the very beginning that the boy has a free hand and all the bonds are there for the girl.  A family loves the boy more, it's less for the girl.  Expensive stuff for the boy, not for the girl.  If this unfortunate discrimination is inculcated in the hearts and minds of both the children from the very beginning, then even if we talk about equality going forward, it will have no meaning.  The good thing is that slowly this awareness has started increasing all over the world.  The families where it was taken care from the very beginning that all rights of girls and boys are equal, children have progressed more in that place.  Girls lacked ability, it was never like this.

But how do girls progress when they are not given equal opportunities? The whole world has witnessed when a girl or woman is given the right opportunity, they demonstrated it by going ahead of the boys and men respectively.  A termite is still there in our society.  Even if girls are given equal opportunities to an extent, they end up coming at one place.  Still nowhere are girls considered worthy of the highest position.  No matter how many times the girl is ahead of the boys in her ability. We have to get rid of this societal curse or evil.

72nd Constitution Day & UN Women India #pebbleinwaterswrites

72nd Constitution Day was celebrated today by Ministry of Women and Child Development & UN Women India honouring women in all walks of life. On this occasion, the event 'Sangram Se Samvidhan Tak' (संग्राम से संविधान तक) that featured Union Minister Smriti Zubin Irani, Ministry of Women and Child Development was held that included a number of prominent dignitaries celebrating  women as the main thrust in India's freedom and democracy. The event took place at the UN House in New Delhi. It was a part of the Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (आज़ादी का अमृत महोत्सव) celebration. India's constitutional history was well commemorated by remembering valuable contributions of great women visionaries who had a strong commitment to uphold the fundamentals of equal and just republic that reflects in our country's foundational charter. The Constitution of India was adopted on 26th November 1949.

72nd Constitution Day & UN Women India #pebbleinwaterswrites

Thus, that day is also marked as a historical step in building our nation. Our constitution is one of the best in the world that comprises of most forward-looking and revolutionary charter. It's remarkable in the sense that it is designed with fundamental ideologies and well defined codes that primarily focus on equality for all diversities that flourish in India. The charter for the independent Republic of India believes in equality and justice for all and includes the reflections of the contributions of the women engineers of our Constitution. Women's right to vote is a crisp example of this. Role of women freedom fighters, lawyers, suffragettes, educationists, reformists, and politicians imbibed great inspiration in drafting it that focussed on setting a strong, equal, and common national identity for every citizen of India. That's how it was laid with a strong foundation.

Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Indevar Pandey said,

The history of the Indian struggle would be incomplete without mentioning the contributions of women. The sacrifices made by the women of India will always occupy the foremost place.

Our freedom movement brought women to the centre of political life, at a time in history when that was very rare. I am so proud of this. Their contributions made India a more just and equal society,”

Susan Jane Feruguson, UN Women India Country Representative said,

“Let’s honour the sheer indomitable will of the women in their country, and everywhere ーpast, present and future, who’ve demonstrated the courage and commitment to bring about a just and equal society.”

72nd Constitution Day & UN Women India #pebbleinwaterswrites

Union Minister, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India, Smt Smriti Zubin Irani, in her keynote address said,

“We've had the opportunity to honour the excellence and determination of so many women of India, especially those women of history who took part in writing the Indian Constitution. This constitution was not given to us. We gave it to ourselves. Let us remind ourselves on Constitution Day the things the Indian Constitution stands for - justice to all, appeasement to none.”

Bodies With Vagina #CauseAChatter #GenderTalk #MyFriendAlexa #PebbleInWatersWrites #TheLancet

We all know how prestigious and reputed Lancet general medical journal is among not only medical fraternity but otherwise also. It is a weekly journal and is one of the world's oldest and top-read across the globe. Founded in 1823 by Thomas Wakley, an English surgeon, it got popular in no time because of its quality of content and gravity of relevance. Its name was derived by its founder from a surgical instrument with the same name. After the release of its latest volume 398, No. 10306, there is a huge furor across the globe because of an article published by Sophia Davis under 'Perspective' section of the journal on pages 1124-1125. The objection is on the phrase "Bodies With Vagina" used in place of "Women". The article titled "Periods on display" talks about an exhibition entitled Periods: A Brief History at the Vagina Museum in London, UK.

Bodies With Vagina #CauseAChatter #GenderTalk #MyFriendAlexa #PebbleInWatersWrites #TheLancet
Source: The Lancet

This article by Sophia Davis, Senior Editor, Lancet is very well researched, nicely structured, and interestingly driven starting with the silence, shame, and stigma associated with the menstruation and how the societies and cultures are opening up, challenging it, and boldly accepting it. In this regard, it refers to one of the best books busting taboos about menstruation by Emma Barnett titled as It's about Bloody Time. Period, published in 2019. It also talks about Period Poverty, i.e. lack of access to sanitary products and safety and hygiene issues associated with it. How period poverty combines with shame and lack of knowledge about menstruation, thus causing complex situations leading to missing schools, etc. hampering growth of girls in a calm and healthy manner. A number of initiatives are being taken across the globe by various agencies, organizations, activists, individuals, educationists, and governments.

I have read this 2-page intense article by Sophia Davis, and have understood the intent, gravity, and concerns raised by the author. Even when this phrase has been used, it is in a very different context, not at all demeaning or derogating women in any manner. I am a hundred percent sure that all those people and new agencies raising objection over it across various social media platforms are doing it without even reading this article or understanding it. What they are doing is just for their personal benefits. Coming back to the article that has a plenty of important and useful information, it talks about how a new wave of activists in their individual capacities, and at some place, in a collaborative manner are addressing various issues related to periods and menstruation.

Like, Rayka Zahtabchi, director, and Melissa Berton, producer, have been well acclaimed for their Oscar-winning documentary film titled "Period. End of Sentence." released in 2018. The movie is about a group of young women in an Indian village, learning about a machine that makes low-cost sanitary pads. In wake of this, Anita Diamant authored a book titled "Period. End of Sentence. A New Chapter in the Fight for Menstrual Justice" in 2021. This is just a bit of that excellent article. Now, coming to the controversial phrase "Bodies with Vagina", let me just quote the exact content used by Sophia Davis in her latest article only once and in a very relevant manner. You will be the right judge to say whether it is with an intent to insult women in any manner or it is used rightly. Do write below in comment section to give your views on it.

Historically, the anatomy and physiology of bodies with vaginas have been neglected—for example, the paucity in understanding of endometriosis and the way women’s pain has been seen as more likely to have an emotional or psychological cause, a hangover from centuries of theorising about hysteria. This
exhibition and the Vagina  Museum as a whole aim to redress this lack of attention.

Salute To Anujath Sindhu Vinaylal And All Mothers On This Earth @CauseAChatter #GenderTalk

Least would have Anujath Sindhu Vinaylal thought of grabbing any reward while creating a painting. He is a 9th Standard student and is just 14. But with this painting he has become a global entity. The title of the painting is “ente ammayum ayalpakkathe ammamarum” That means “My mother and mothers in neighbourhood”. Anujath belongs to Thrissur, Kerala. He got tired of hearing his mother doesn't work, he created this painting that shows her doing her various chores. This painting when he submitted in his school, impressed his teacher so much so that they submitted it to the government. And now, the painting is the cover for the State's 2020/21 gender document. Unfortunately, his mother passed away in 2019, a few months before Anujath won this recognition for his fabulous work.

This painting is so powerful in conveying a lot of daily chores a woman performs so silently and without expecting any appreciation in return. It is poor at the other end how we ignore so much of the efforts and energies a woman puts in, in managing a family and making a house a home. Unfortunately, none of these activities shown in the painting she does for her own purpose. Every activity depicted is for the family and home. That is the greatness of a woman. In fact, a woman is the biggest warrior in the family. I think despite contributing any amount of help to her will be minuscule in comparison to what the women at home do. Is this by default of design? Do we just take it for granted just to ignore all what she does at home? Just because it is being done so silently and without any hype?

Salute To Anujath Sindhu Vinaylal And All Mothers On This Earth @CauseAChatter #GenderTalk

On the other hand, I think, it is just a matter of consciousness to take every bit of effort in account. Especially when we, the men, boast so much about our works, deeds, and efforts which become negligible if we look at the broader picture of life a little minutely.

Orlando Shooting Guides Amy Schumer to Cut Gun Scene from her Movie

June 12 was a black day for Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the United States where more than fifty persons died in a mass shooting attack by a terrorist. The gunman was killed later by Orlando police after a 3-hour fight. Around 60 persons were injured during Orlando shooting. It has been reported as the most heinous attack by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against LGTB community in United States history. It has also been reported as the severest terrorist attack in the United States post 9/11 attack in 2001.

Omar Mateen, 29, an American, born to Afghan parents is identified as the assailant. He was a regular visitor of the nightclub and is supposedly having links with ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) though CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) has not been able to find any links between Mateen and ISIL.

Amy Schumer, actress, and comedian has taken a lesson from this mass shooting incident and has revisited her already created latest film that is yet to be released. Schumer's new comedy project that is yet to be titled is based on a mother-and-daughter kidnapping in which she will be seen alongside Goldie Hawn of The First Wives Club fame.

Schumer, deeply shocked by the tragic shooting in Orlando in a homophobic mass attack has decided to cut a scene from the movie that involves gun firing at others by a person. The age-old debate is always there whether movies inspire criminals or real-life crime stories inspire movies. Though the details of the scene that is cut are not very much clear but definitely it is in line with the expectation by the whole world to curb violence and killing of innocent people all across the globe. Terrorism has been increasing like an unstoppable virus that needs to be curbed at the earliest.

#ShareTheLoad - When Swamiji Enlightened With The Reason Behind

I was meeting Swami after a long time. This time the reason was #ShareTheLoad. I wanted to understand the crux of the reason behind a cruel reality of our society where Women have taken the route to equality for the external world of a family by stepping out to work and share the financial load of a family. But her label of being a homemaker still remains intact. A woman despite taking care of multiple roles of a mother, sister or a wife is still being held solely responsible for household chores as her prime responsibility. The age old phenomenon of 'division of labor' is still unaltered and is deep rooted in our home, society, and nation expecting the women of the house to own all responsibilities within the four walls of the home.

#ShareTheLoad - When Swamiji Enlightened With The Reason Behind
Photo credit: Saarblitz via Visual hunt / CC BY-NC-SA

Right since so many years, a child is taught that a girl is the one performing domestic chores like cleaning, washing, cooking, etc. while a boy in the family has to yearn for a profession to be the primary earning member of the family and take the onus of earning the bread and butter for the entire family. The scenario has changed in one direction when girls are prepared for a professional life and women have taken an equal responsibility of an equal or maybe, a higher earner in the family. But what about the other side of the wall? Why every household chore is still the responsibility of the woman of the house even if she has to sacrifice her life, profession, education, stamina, and energy manifold to just follow it blindly without raising her voice against it?

Swami is my good old childhood friend turned a multinational c-suite executive as per the last information we met a decade back. After that I lost his track or probably he wanted to go in an isolation state to take a final call of his life. During our early education days I had a big impact of Swami's ideologies. He was quite serious and matured during those days. He was beyond his age. He, in fact, was my mentor, inspite of being my classmate. He never differentiated between genders. When I used to visit his house, he would be helping his mother in her household chores without a hitch. He would go to kitchen to prepare tea, would not hesitate to wash clothes, to clean house and so on. These small gestures turned me too into similar kind of guy and I never felt insulted doing all such things at home. Neither did my male chauvinism would get hurt.

After a decade when I got Swami's call, I could not dare to ignore it. He was in India for a decade now after he resigned from his MNC well flourishing job and decided to take a different route. I got surprised to know that for last 10 years he is on a mission to educate youth of the country with a cause. And the cause is to eradicate gender bias in everybody's life. He has been successful in this. He has become a wanderer. He visits remote villages and towns to educate people about this. Educating them to break the invisible walls between a man and a woman.

“You know the reason behind these walls is nothing but our mindset that sets the barriers. Once you are able to break that jinx, everything seems easy and attainable.” He said when we met recently. I left my job because everyday I used to stand in front of mirror and ask myself what is my purpose in life.” “And one day I found the answer from within.” The answer that he got a decade back made him resign from his job and start his own venture. A venture where money is not the top priority for him. This is an education venture where he not only teaches children who are the builders of our nation but also their parents to make them understand that the times are gone for creating a gap between a girl and a boy.

Today all are equal and have same set of responsibilities. Men are equally homemaker with their family as women of the house. If a woman can work full time why can't a man share household chores with her and #ShareTheLoad? If a mother can bear the pain of birth of her child, why can't father take the equal ownership when the child is born?

That is Swami who is building his army of youngsters to fight with these evils of our society and gear everyone up to #ShareTheLoad. I feel proud to be part of Swami's bandwagon. Find out Swami around you. It lies inside everybody's heart, mind, and soul.

#ShareTheLoad Be The Top Agenda of the Whole Country

A local politician's birthday prompted him to invite children from various schools at his place for celebration. A few guys from media also were invited as a strategic step to show Netaji's love for the kids of the nation. I decided to prompt Netaji on this occasion to know his views on #ShareTheLoad and let the representatives of Gen Next present there understand it. It was all unplanned. Netaji didn't know what I had in mind. Neither did anybody else have a hint about it.

#ShareTheLoad Be The Top Agenda of the Whole Country

The kids between the age 7-15 were assembled well in time at his premise. The setup was made outside lawns of his huge bungalow. A big pandal and a lot of chairs were organized on one side of the lawns. Another side had catering arrangements. The agenda was cake cutting by the birthday boy (Netaji), a short speech by him addressing children on how to build the country and what all is there in store for them to explore in future. After that there was a small session for media queries and then snacks and food for the children before they were to disperse for their respective places.

After the cake cutting ceremony, Netaji started addressing the children about his party's good work being done for the country in general, and children in specific. He shouldered a big responsibility on children as they were the next in queue to take onus of building the nation. He stressed on adopting good things from all across the globe and bring those into practice. After he closed his speech, questions from children and media were invited. Prompted by me, a kid sitting next to me raised his hand and asked the question I had injected into his ears. “Sir, Many happy returns of the day. I want to know what steps and direction should we as the younger generation take to curb gender prejudices?”, he asked Netaji.

“I am very impressed by the question you have asked and am happy that you raised this concern that everyone of us has been living with for so many years.” He replied with a smile on his face. “But the time has come that you children will have to take a lead and set an example at your home to kill this virus that has been haunting us for so many years.” He called the kid on stage. “Let me give you an example of what I do in this regard, and then you all can decide to take it further in your own way. My only request is not to stop your journey in between till we all are able to achieve #ShareTheLoad in the whole country.”

He invited one of his housemaids on stage. “Meet Kantabai. She has been working at my place since I was in school. When I was a kid like you all, I used to see her working so hard at our place. Then she would go to her quarter adjacent to our bungalow to do all her house chores. I found that her husband neither was having any job, nor was he helping his wife in any of their house chores. One day when he came to our place to inform that Kantabai was unwell and hence would not be able to come, I went along with him to their quarter. Kantabai was not in a good shape and hence I promised her to do their house chores that day. In the beginning her husband was just sitting and watching me but gradually somehow he felt something inside and started helping me. After sometime he told me to leave rest of the things that he would finish.”

“That day brought a big change in Kantabai's life as everyday when she would reach her quarter after finishing her job, she would find Rajaram, her husband busy in finishing house chore. He took the complete responsibility of all house chores.” Netaji was overwhelmed and so was everyone present there. “What are your takeaways from this story?” He asked children. And almost everyone was eager to reply. “I would request my parents not to differentiate between my sister and me and would ensure I don't get any extra advantage for being a boy.” One of them replied. And almost everyone had a similar kind of reply.

#ShareTheLoad Be The Top Agenda of the Whole Country

I was sure, the flame is lit in every heart and would definitely light every house these kids have come from to finish the age old conventions of woman only being a perfect homemaker even when she has stepped out to share the financial load with man. Now men will not feel ashamed in #SharingTheLoad and even if some of them do, the children will not let them, now. One thing is clear, every Netaji is not fake. There are few with great leadership qualities to set an example for others. I hope every child will become a true leader in this regard for his parents, peers, family, friends, and whosoever comes in their life.

She Ekla Cholo Re – Book Review: A Story To Change Your Perspective

She Ekla Cholo Re is written by Dr. Shayan Haq and Santosh Avvannavar, and edited by Rajashree Ghosh. The 50-page fiction story is far beyond the length and breadth of it. It conveys an ocean-size message in this small story written so crisply, concisely and precisely. The story revolved around the lead character Kusum who takes birth in a Doctor's family of repute during the 1990s in Calcutta (now Kolkata). It takes time for Kusum and her affectionate mother to understand the dilemma Kusum is born with. Her mother accepts the reality because her ego was far smaller than her affection and love for her child. But that was not true in the case of her father whose ego was supreme and above his love for his wife or child. Against all odds, Kusum never let her conscious die to realize the cruel reality of her life when finding and establishing her identity was not an easy task for her like others around.

She Ekla Cholo Re – Book Review: A Story To Change Your Perspective

I loved reading this short and crisp story She Ekla Cholo Re. The way Kusum identifies her identity issues for the first time and tries to cope up with the expectations of her father is very well understood in a normal scenario that anyone would have done under those circumstances. But, on the other hand, Kusum is presented as a strong character and a brave heart even when she finds her identity untitled or blurred. It takes some time for her to understand the reality behind this dilemma but once she understands the truth, it becomes her goal to move beyond the social conditioning of 'he' or 'she' to make it clear in her own mind and to the society.

Overall, a very interesting book She Ekla Cholo Re is and must be read by everyone. It is short, crisp and has a strong message for each individual and for the society as a whole. It takes courage to fight against all odds in life the way Kusum did. It takes a high amount of maturity and courage to accept the reality of Kusum in a real life scenario. The end comes with a pleasant surprise and must not be missed. 50-odd pages can be read in one go, and that brings the enjoyment and strong message behind the story much clearer. This book has proved that a strong message can be conveyed in fewer words rather than writing spicy long novels. I would rate it 5 out of 5 without any doubt and am sure you will do the same once you read it.

The eventful Business event had three introspective and enlightening panel discussions, and two lively and innovative ramp shows. The topic for the first panel discussion was “Luxury for Masses”. With the change in time definition of luxury keeps changing. What was luxury yesterday is a common need for all today. But Luxury remains luxury and is never for masses. Only point of satisfaction is that what a man couldn't afford yesterday because it was luxury, is within his reach today. This happens because of two reasons – one, the elevation of a human being on financial front, and two, the level of luxury has changed so what was luxury yesterday has been replaced by some other commodity today.

Second panel discussion was on “Redefining Fashion, E-Commerce, and Retail”. Nina Selbst Author Interview: Faced Injustice of Sorting Human Beings

Nina Selbst was born in 1928, in Cape Town

Nina Selbst's parents were the children of penniless immigrants

Nina Selbst began to be troubled as she reached adolescence

Nina Selbst was born in 1928, in Cape Town, in the shadow of Table Mountain, recently selected as one of the wonders of the world. In fact, she became Nina Selbst from Nina Herbstein after she got married. Her parents were the children of penniless, immigrants who had escaped the cruel antisemitism of Eastern Europe and, in only a couple of decades of hard work, managed to establish themselves in the community and open up to their children avenues of personal and professional advancement. She grew up, with three brothers, in the seaside village of Muizenberg in a comfortable, secure, middle class environment. Discrimination against non-whites was part of the accepted order of society but it was very much milder than the virulent, ideological form it took in the later years of Apartheid. It seemed quite natural until she reached adolescence and began to be troubled by the injustice of sorting human beings into a rigid hierarchy by the color of their skin.

 Welcome! Nina Selbst

Your Real Name
I was born Nina Herbstein but, though a feminist by inclination, on marriage took my husband's surname, so I am Nina Selbst
        Best Memories of Childhood:
Growing up in the wonderful village of Muizenberg, enjoying the most beautiful surroundings of the Cape Peninsula, swimming in the Indian Ocean, horse-riding along the beach with its endless white sands, scrambling up the Muizenberg mountain, canoeing on the Vlei – all in the company of great friends and almost free of adult supervision

My Education:
After a brief few years at a co-educational school, I was moved to a girls' school, where I completed my high school education. I was a good student but found most of what was offered as 'education' excruciatingly boring. Real intellectual challenge came from a home in which everything (with the exception of sex and death) was discussed in front of the children and with their active participation, and from my peers in the far left Zionist Socialist Youth movement that I joined at fifteen

What career did you plan?
For a number of years I wanted to be a chemist and nothing else. Fortunately for me I realized, after only a year of academic study in the field, that this was not for me and I turned to the social sciences.
What languages can you speak and write?
English is my mother tongue but I also speak, read and write Hebrew freely...I was once reasonably fluent in Afrikaans, the other language of white South Africans, but regrettably my competence has faded over years of disuse. Even more regrettably, the languages of Black South Africans were a closed book to me .I enjoyed learning Spanish, which I found useful as a tourist, but was always better at speaking carefully prepared sentences than at understanding replies delivered at express train speed

.
What is your biggest source of inspiration in life?
That's a hard question. I suppose that at this stage of life it is watching my eight granddaughters grow into such fine human beings, each in her own way.
What hurts you most in this world?
In a most general sense, the unnecessary suffering that human beings inflict on one another. More specifically, the failure of the two peoples who occupy the narrow strip of land that I call home, to find a way to live, together or apart, in peace and mutual respect

If you had to live a day in your life as a living or dead personality, who would it be and why?.
Moses, on the last day of his life. I would devote that day to writing my autobiography so that future generations could have an authentic account of what really happened in those distant days, straight from a participant and eye witness. On second thoughts though, perhaps Moses is not a valid choice, being in all probability neither living nor dead, but a creature of the fertile human imagination.
What is your favorite genre?
History, both fiction and non-fiction but most particularly the seamless combination of the two, wonderfully represented by Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, for instance. It is a genre that provides a wealth of insights into the enduring sources of human motivation.
When did you start writing? What is the purpose of your writing?
My earliest writing was not from choice. From the moment that I learned to put pencil to paper, I was expected to write – happy birthday greetings and get well wishes to my grandparents, thank you notes for birthday presents received and so on. My early efforts were rather stilted and standardized, but the habit became firmly established. From the time I left home I wrote to my parents every single week and kept them abreast of all, (well perhaps not quite all!), that was happening in my life
Which of your work has been published so far? Would you like to share a synopsis of your work?
Disregarding a miscellaneous collection of articles, reports and professional papers, short stories and accounts of family history intended for a limited circle, my one published work is "Writ in Water" (November 2015)
The. book is a wide-ranging account of the diverse ways in which water is intertwined with the story of humanity. It opens with creation myths, those narratives never lacking a role for water, invented to explain how our world began. It closes with a listing of place names the world over, all with references to watery features of the landscape. In between it offers accounts of clean drinking water and foul, of irrigation – ancient and modern, of cleanliness and godliness, of exploration of the unknown along great rivers, of water wheels and hydroelectricity, of art and poetry and a good deal more.
The researching and writing of this book has been a fascinating journey of discovery for me. I can only hope that it will provide both pleasure and enlightenment to anyone who undertakes to read it.

Forthcoming writing, future plans
Perhaps I will manage a little story book for my two great grandsons, but at the age of eighty seven, plans for the future really belong in the same realm as green bananas.
What is generally your preference in reading – a paper book or ebook? And why?
I love the look and feel of printed books but cannot resist the enchantment of having a book at my disposal seconds after deciding to read it, with the additional bonus that it makes no demands for space on my crowded bookshelves. I feel no obligation to choose between them.
Your dream destination on earth
The top of Mount McKinley. When I was sixty I promise myself that I was going to climb the highest mountain in America at the age of ninety. As the date approaches I must acknowledge that it is going to remain a dream destination.
Countries you have visited
I have at least set foot on four of the five continents. Never made it to Australia.
Last book you finished reading?
Sapiens, a Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari
Current book you are reading?
The Little Prince Returns by Yoram Selbst.
Just published in Hebrew. Not yet available in English
Your favorite movie?
The African Queen. A funny and moving story of two people discovering love in a very surprising setting. Perfect performances by two great actors – Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.
Favorite celebrity?
I have no taste for celebrities.
What comes to your mind when you think of India?
Bhagvad-Gita, Mahatma Ghandi, curry, colonialism, sacred cows, funeral pyres and widows' homes on the banks of mother Ganga, grinding poverty and enormous potential

First thing you do in the morning after waking up?

The last thing to do before sleep
Read until the book falls from my hand.
The last line of your autobiography would be..
Past Imperfect – that sums up this story.
The title of your autobiography would be…
Truth to tell…
