Amazon's quest to sell all things to all people has a catastrophic carryover -- over 75 dead and scores injured by unsafe trucking contractors. Truckers moving Amazon goods around the country were more thantwiceas likely to receive unsafe driving scores compared with similar outfits. The investigative article byThe Wall Street Journal'sChristopher Weaver analyzes Amazon's push for prompt deliveries and the ongoing fallout of injuries and deaths.
The WSJ identifies many shocking incidents, including a driver convicted of driving while high when a crack pipe was found after he ran into a ditch, and a fatal accident in Kansas when a driver lost control while braking -- two months after his employer ignored a police order to fix the truck’s brakes.
Trucking companies hauling freight for Amazon have been involved in crashes that killed more than 75 people since 2015, according to the Journal’s review, adding Amazon "offers condolences to families of people killed in crashes that involve its contractors."
The WSJ identified a group of 3,512 trucking firms that were inspected three or more times -- for both routine and law-enforcement reasons -- while working for Amazon between February 2020 and early August 2022. In the Amazon group, 39% of contractors scored above a level set by the DOT to trigger regulatory action in at least one month in the analysis. That compared with about 17% among a peer group of all other for-hire general freight companies with a similar number of inspections.
The data show companies that “frequently haul Amazon’s freight are systematically more likely to have poor driving safety scores,” said Jason Miller, a Michigan State University professor who studies transportation safety and validated the Journal’s methodology and findings. The result, he said, is that “American motorists are put at greater risk.”
The Journal found evidence in the government records that 48 companies with conditional ratings hauled Amazon trailers since early 2020, apparently violating Amazon's own rules. Government data reviewed by the Journal show that 375 companies hauled Amazon freight with scores worse than Amazon requires even after the company changed its rules. That includes more than 60 with worse-than-required scores in February that were still hauling Amazon trailers in June and July.
In its freight network, Amazon closely tracks on-time delivery performance, according to former executives and drivers who have worked for Amazon. Trucking contractors with strong on-time records get rewarded with priority access to book certain loads. Contractors that missed delivery deadlines and other performance measures were punished with quick suspensions, several truckers said.
In contrast, truck operators such as United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) keep such serious safety violations low. Since early 2020, state inspectors and police cited UPS for tractor-trailer drivers who kept false logs of driving hours in fewer than one in a thousand inspections. By contrast, they flagged Amazon contractors at a rate about 70 times higher. UPS drivers are employees who receive salaries rather than contractors who often are paid by the mile.

The 'Fair Start' film showcases these factors through various angles. The film aims to get an insight into the lives of millions of children coming from different walks of life and having different backgrounds.
#FairStart campaign and 'Fair Start' film wants to elaborate the life of million of children who don't get enough chances in life to show their real talent hidden inside and who are full of potential but are devoid of grow up healthy, happy, and safe. These children have least chances of attending school due to their circumstances and situations. And hence they are less likely to learn, and have high chances of getting married as children. Most of these children are forced to forget their childhood at a very early stage and get engaged in some kind of work in order to earn money.
#FairStart is a drive. It is a mission. It seeks involvement from every element of the society. Every person has to contribute from whichever segment he or she belongs to. After all, everyone has a responsibility towards the children of the nation. Introducing this noble mission and showing the film, Caroline Den Dulk, Chief, Advocacy & Communication, UNICEF India emphasized every child of the country, or rather on this earth, deserves a fair start in his/her life and has an equal right for adequate nutrition, safety, education, psychological and physical protection, sanitation, and health care. The campaign is launched with its primary goal to draw attention to the lives of the children who are deprived of these fundamental and basic rights, usually at times determined simply by where they are born.
#FairStart campaign and Fair Start film tries to convey the message that every child should have a fair and equal chance in life without any consideration of their caste, gender, ethnicity, poverty, religion, or region. The drive in this regard is gaining momentum for last many years as UNICEF is working closely with the Government of India and many other associates to improve the condition of the most vulnerable and deprived children with an aim to ensure that each child born in this vast and complex country gets the best beginning of his life, and gets all possible favorable conditions to develop to his or her full potential.
Every child has a right for a #FairStart. As of now, more than 6 million children in India are out-of-school as per a study conducted by SRI-IMRB for Ministry of HRD, Government of India, in 2014. Census 2011 data says more than 10 million children are engaged in work in the country.. 2013 Report of Sample Registration System shows almost 3500 children die on a daily basis before reaching age 5. A data from RSOC 2013-14 shows 42 percent of tribal children in India are stunted during their growth and development. UNICEF-WHO Joint Monitoring Report 2015 data shows almost half of the population of India which is around 570 million people still practice open defecation. Another data from Census + RSOC 2013-14 states that although girls in India deserve an equal chance in life, but on an average more than 2 million girls marry early every year in the country. Another research shows based on a report by NFHS3 that more than 23% girls between 15-19 years of age experience physical or sexual violence during some point of time.
Den Dulk said that mostly such issues faced are severly complex in nature and cut across all layers of society. There is a tremendous change in mindset required to make changes happen in real life. Merely listening to or observing these stastitics or attending these talks or conclaves will not suffice the purpose. The #FairStart campaign comes with a serious purpose of engaging the largest possible chunk of public in a debate and conversation for everyone to see they have a role to play to ensure every child can have a fair chance in life.

The film has been made with a lot of love by the team and they hope everyone likes it. What they need in return is a small portion of help from everybody to get a fair start, life. He wants to become a scientist.

NFC technology of near field technology is an RFID-based technology. It works well in close proximities exceeding not more than 4-5 centimetres. The closer is the proximity the better will be the results. Worldwide a lot of initiatives are being taken to boost NFC technology but as such no considerable and sustainable real-life mass project has been launched. Though there have been many pilots completed successfully but it still at a mass scale it has to see the day of light. When we talk of a near field communication enabled phone, Nokia 6210C was among the earliest. It was launched in 2007. I did a pilot based on NFC technology in the largest mall named City Stars in Cairo, Egypt. It was a true challenging venture as I had to manage the deployment single handed.
How it got initiated? Our India based IT Company was handling all the group companies spread across the globe. I am talking about the largest security company in the world. We were headquartered in the UK. Our group company operations faced a tough challenge and we were approached by our headquarter team to find out a solution. The company based in Cairo had deployed over 800 security guards and supervisors in City Stars. City Stars is situated in the hub of the city and is a most happening place in Cairo, Egypt. I was assigned the task to design, develop and deploy the solution for this challenge. The challenge arose when one of the guards deployed at 6th Floor of the mall absconded. He was assigned a duty near the 6th-floor emergency exit. There are two buildings – old and new, each having 8 floors. We know that emergency exits are rarely used, only in crisis. And when the crisis itself happens too rarely, it remains barren.
Three days later his dead body was found in the emergency exit area. That created an emergency for the mall administration to deploy a real-time alert mechanism. We exported 12 nos. of Nokia 6210 Classic from Scotland. Around 2000 nos. of various sized RFID tags and cards were procured from a local but reliable vendor. A web based solution was designed and a front end mobile based micro app was developed. The mobile applet would reside on the phone and will sync in an almost real-time environment with the server. There were multiple modules designed. One was to read every guard and supervisor for attendance at the time of his entry and exit. The supervisor on round used to read tags mounted on walls of the mall to ensure his actual tour is in place as per plan. If there is an incidence, the supervisor will capture snaps that will be transferred to the server in real time. There were many more issues that we were able to address. Overall, the NFC technology or near field technology based solution was very successful. Soon it was deployed in many more countries for various solutions like the largest university in Saudi, some businesses in Kuwait and Turkey. That was a fantastico project driven by me.

Blueair India launched its new range of intelligent health and safety indoor products. The first product is Blueair Sense+ that is an intelligent indoor air purifier. The second product is Blueair Aware an intelligent indoor air quality monitor. And the third product is a Blueair Friend App for iOS and Android based smartphones. I met Blueair Founder and global CEO Bengt Rittri and Vijay Kannan, Head of Blueair India in person yesterday. I gave them two innovative ideas to think about when then launch their next product range. And both agreed that it was brilliant ideas to incorporate. The first idea was based on Government of India’s initiative about Smart Cities. I asked them to join hands with the Government of India for this drive and take it up as a business opportunity. Let the government of India be the project sponsors for funding the project. So far Blueair’s product range is indoor air purifiers and monitors. I suggested them to propose central government with a proper business case to launch heavy duty mobile air purifier vans for keeping cities air pollution free. These vans will roam around in the cities as high range outdoor air purifiers and air quality monitors. The second suggestion was for the health of younger kids. I suggested them to manufacture air purifier jackets, caps school bags, etc... to keep the environment clean around them when they are outdoors. I have a business case and business plan ready if required.

Currently, all products that are sold by Blueair India are manufactured in Sweden. Probably they should also think about the Make In India concept launched by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Now about the products. Blueair Sense+ is quite an intelligent and inventive air purifier as compared to any other brand in the world. Will LTO7 from HPE be able to take the top slot in storage?

HP Enterprise (HPE) has acquired the second position in backup solution within a short span. With the launch of LTO7, it aspires to achieve the number one position thus surpassing EMC. The top slot is currently held by EMC. When HP entered the storage solutions market, it started from the bottom of the ladder with so many players above it. Within a short span, it has acquired the second slot. The credit goes to its innovative solutions and a strict roadmap. The roadmap for LTO 8, LTO 9 and LTO 10 is clearly defined and the teams are working on it accordingly. HPE LTO 7 has a capacity of 15 TB (Terabytes). This is the compressed data capacity. HPE StoreEver is the latest entrant in the race. A single cartridge of LTO 7 can store up to 15 TB of compressed data. This is, in reality, a dream come true for storage hungry corporate. In a race of good and bad (Zica and Zika) who will win?
Is Zica impacted heavily by Zika?
Is it a fight between the good and the evil? Tata Zica is the name of the new car to be launched by the international automobile player Tata Motors. Recently Lionel Massi became the global brand ambassador of Tata Motors. The international automobile giant is in two minds – whether to change the name of its brand new hatchback from Zica to something else? Has Zika overpowered Zica? Zika is the deadly virus that is spreading at a faster pace across the globe. The sad part is that there is no vaccine or medicine to kill this virus, so far. But on the other hand, it is a great opportunity for medical science to trace the cure for this virus. If this is a battle between Zika and Zica, it has to be tackled well by the automobile company Tata Motors. Is Zika creating a threat to the name Zica for the new hatchback that the company has launched recently? Is it wise to change the name of Tata Zica to something else because the untimely acknowledgement of the virus has taken over the stage?
How does it matter if Zika had come after the successful launch of Tata Zica by Tata Motors? How does it matter if the name resembles? No sensible person will confuse Zika and Zica. Everyone knows how deadly the new virus Zika is. Everyone knows about the quality and technology imbibed by Tata Motors in all their products. In my opinion, it does not matter even if the deadly Zika has become more popular in no time because of its high intensity of risks and threats. Both the genres are different. Zika is a virus whereas Zica is a car. Zika is negative. Zica is positive. Zika is a threat to mankind. Zica is a boon to technology and quality. Zika demands the killing of the virus. Zica is bound to be the first choice in hatchback segment in India. Zika is the first choice to kill it. Zica is the first choice to acquire it. Zika is a threat. Zica is a zeal that is made of great. Zika is represented by a mosquito. Zica is represented by two greats – Tata Motors and Lionel Messi. There is no comparison between the two at all. Zica must not get sidelined by the spread of Zika. Maybe the positive energies created by Zica would be able to get Zika overpowered by science and technology soon.
If we see some recent conflicting names the first set that comes to my mind is Obama and Osama. One is the great President of the United States Barack Obama. But he never tried to change his name because of the most notorious terrorist Osama Bin Laden. It is the deeds and quality that make you great whatever name you carry. Once Zica has been decided as the name for this revolutionary car from Tata Motors, they should stick to it, in my opinion. There should not be any impact of Zika on Zica.
