If you have read today's news about India and EVs (Electric Vehicles), Delhi is emerging as the largest buyer of EVs among other states. There could be multiple reasons for that. One, people are getting aware of serious repercussions of severe pollution conditions in Delhi. Two, people are getting health conscious. Three, the running cost gets drastically low for the EV owner. Four, breakdowns go low. There could be many more. Now, the question is, as the number of EV owners go high, it automatically demands a good level of comfort of owning it. Comfort, in terms of having ample charging stations, owning standby batteries at low cost, availability of vehicles without delays and long waiting, support when needed to be there in nearby proximity, subsidy from government for buying a new EV, and so on. And, I think, things are improving at a faster pace.

It is, thus, quite evident that an EV revolution is evolving and at a faster speed. More and more automobile manufacturers are coming with fresher EV launched and there are more in the pipeline in the coming year, i.e., 2022. Mind it, these launches will be there with a number of deals and offers to attract buyers in an effort to make them go green. There was a video released in 2008 that showed Tesla's Elon Musk, who was talking about affordable electric vehicles. That video is getting quite popular these days. That was a period when Tesla was not in a comfortable position in the market and on top of that the EVs were being thought as irrelevant. Right now, Tesla is the market leader in EVs, having a huge target of delivering around 1.5 million vehicles in 2022. That is seriously incredible.

EV has become number one choice across the globe while buying a vehicle. This is going to exceed exorbitantly in 2022. In India, most of the automobile manufacturers like Suzuki, Maruti, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Honda, and Mahindra & Mahindra are aggressively focussing on the production of EVs. Tata Motors, for instance, is launching Altroz EV in 2022. It, already has, brands like Tigor and Nexon in EV segment. Each of these automobile giant is expanding space, capacity, and infrastructure to cater to EV market rise in 2022. As a matter of fact, Tata Chemicals is working towards acquiring UK-based battery company Johnson Matthey in order to develop an in-house battery for their EVs. By 2025, Tata Motors is targeting to launch 10 EVs. Buyers also are worried about rising fuel prices and are shifting to EVs as a better choice in all aspects.

This is one of the prime reason of EVs sales going up consistently. In fact, in November this year, Tata Motors sales of EVs went up four times. Like, it had sold just around 400 EVs a year ago, taking Tigor EV and Nexon EV together. The same set of brands together touched sales of 1800 EVs. Tata Punch EV is also in the pipeline to be launched in 2022 in the sub-compact SUV category. On the other hand, Hyundai is relaunching Kona EV in 2022. Ioniq 5, its sedan EV, is also scheduled to be launched in mid-2022. This will be a bit higher on the price bar as initially it will be totally imported. Mahindra is also planning to launch 16 EVs by 2027 and thus is going for big investments in this regard. Interestingly, Nissan and Tesla, both, have released their individual plans to enter India.

In the two-wheeler EV segment, Hero MotoCorp is launching their first battery operated scooter in March 2022. If we look at startups in automobile vertical, Ola Electric has already launched its two electric scooters S1 and S1 Pro in August 2021. Many governments on the global front are planning to encourage automobile buyers to go green by offering them tax benefits. The US President Joe Biden has already started initiatives in this direction. In India, many state governments have already started setting their targets and policies to make a promising impact on the environmental needs. These targets, in turn, will push automobile companies to go aggressive in production of EVs. Definitely, there will be incentives for producers and buyers of EVs. This will work as a catalyst to boost the demand and sales of EVs across the country.  In metros, that thrust is already visible in a significant manner.

As I stated right in the beginning, there has to be a comfort level for a buyer intending to buy an Electric Vehicle. EV startup Ather Energy is going to set up more than 500 fast-charging stations by March 2022. This is creating a new set of tie-ups of such companies with malls, gyms, retail stores, etc. These locations will be a part of the charging network. Ideally, a two-wheeler will be charged within 30 minutes. Hero Electric has a plan to set up more than one lakh EV charging stations across the country. For the same, it has partnered with EV charging startup Charzer. In 2022, more than 10,000 charging stations will be operative across 30 cities by Hero Electric. Look at the newer avenues and opportunities that have emerged all of a sudden.

A number of mobile apps will be in place soon to locate nearest charging stations that is very much required by EV owners. Central government has already pumped around 300 crore worth of incentives in various shapes to fasten the production of  almost 100,000 EVs in the country. In any case, even if the cost of batteries goes a bit higher, as is expected, it will still be a better option in comparison to petrol and diesel in every aspect.

My Dream Vehicle - Datsun redi-GO

Maneuvering through roads in the Indian subcontinent is a herculean task. It is here, that you would be able to witness people unmindful of the existence of zebra crossings and traffic lights. Add to it, ignorant fellows who are least bothered by the fact that they are answerable to and have to cooperate with fellow individuals behind the wheel. Driving on urban roads is a Great Circus of sorts, as people are often of the opinion that they are solitary drivers, who can manipulate these roads to their heart’s content.

On the other hand, even the roads in urban landscapes are in a dismal state as more often than not, a subtle task such as the construction of roads to map a better connectivity for a city or country’s citizens is synonymous to a money-minting game for the contractors entrusted with the task.

Not more than a couple of days back, I was on the lookout for spacing out my old Zen and finding a replacement for it when I came across the feature-rich redi-GO which is on the lookout for a spectacular launch from the house of Datsun. While the four Made of Great Tata cars are Geared for Great on endurance and performance, a fifth car, Tata Bolt Petrol in the left most lane had an altogether different mission when the event began this Monday, March 14. The mission for this exclusive car was to test the Efficiency of the car. The process to test efficiency is filling the tank to its peak and then let it keep running till the last drop of petrol gets consumed in this nonstop drive. Obviously, when there is no refuelling like it is happening for the other four cars every 2 hours, this car would come to a halt on the track itself. The car is pulled to the pit work bay with the help of a crane. Tata Bolt Petrol has completed its mission 27 hours of nonstop drive clocking a distance of 1344.1 kilometres and consuming all its 47.45 litres. It landed back at 12.04 pm on March 15. The thundering strength is proven for Tata Bolt Petrol that ran on a full fuel tank for almost 27 hours till it drained totally. The next to go was Tata Zest Petrol for the same test. Everyone at VRDE fast track circuit was eyeing on it to see if it will run for more than 27 hours with a full tank like Tata Bolt Petrol or not.

Tata Zest Petrol (Revotron) completed the efficiency test by covering 1449.9 kilometres using 48.5 litres of petrol (one full tank) which substantiated to 29.89 kilometres per litre of consumption. What a great feat achieved by both Tata Passenger cars – Tata Bolt Revotron and Tata Zest Revotron. The next to go in the row was the new Tiago Petrol Revotron that is yet to be launched in the market by Tata Motors.

The four cars geared for endurance race of Tata’s new gen passenger cars – Zest, Bolt and the upcoming Tiago. Tata Bolt Revotron that ran for efficiency test had just around a minute’s halt at the pit work area every two hours for a change of the driver. On the other hand, the driver change frequency was decreased to every four hours instead of two hours in case of Tata Zest Revotron thereby taking half the time on pit work area as compared to the former.

The four cars for endurance are Tata Zest Revotron, Bolt Revotron, and Tiago Revotron Petrol & Diesel. The same is for the efficiency test. While the endurance test is going on in parallel with the four passenger cars roaring at high speed on four different tracks, the fifth track is dedicated to the efficiency test where the cars are proving their efficiency power in a sequential manner. The three cars have already proven the power, fourth one; Tiago Revotorq is on the track. The figures for the two Tiago cars will be revealed after their launch in the market that is about to happen soon.

 47.450 litres of petrol was filled after the Tata Bolt Revotron was brought back in the refuelling area completing its efficiency test. This is the filling up to its neck. When it went for the test 42 litres was filled in the car (probably some petrol would have already been there in the car).

Is it a fight between the good and the evil? Tata Zica is the name of the new car to be launched by the international automobile player Tata Motors. Recently Lionel Massi became the global brand ambassador of Tata Motors. The international automobile giant is in two minds – whether to change the name of its brand new hatchback from Zica to something else? Has Zika overpowered Zica? Zika is the deadly virus that is spreading at a faster pace across the globe. The sad part is that there is no vaccine or medicine to kill this virus, so far. But on the other hand, it is a great opportunity for medical science to trace the cure for this virus. If this is a battle between Zika and Zica, it has to be tackled well by the automobile company Tata Motors. Is Zika creating a threat to the name Zica for the new hatchback that the company has launched recently? Is it wise to change the name of Tata Zica to something else because the untimely acknowledgement of the virus has taken over the stage?

How does it matter if Zika had come after the successful launch of Tata Zica by Tata Motors? How does it matter if the name resembles? No sensible person will confuse Zika and Zica. Everyone knows how deadly the new virus Zika is. Everyone knows about the quality and technology imbibed by Tata Motors in all their products. In my opinion, it does not matter even if the deadly Zika has become more popular in no time because of its high intensity of risks and threats. Both the genres are different. Zika is a virus whereas Zica is a car. Zika is negative. Zica is positive. Zika is a threat to mankind. Zica is a boon to technology and quality. Zika demands the killing of the virus. Zica is bound to be the first choice in hatchback segment in India. Zika is the first choice to kill it. Zica is the first choice to acquire it. Zika is a threat. Zica is a zeal that is made of great. Zika is represented by a mosquito. Zica is represented by two greats – Tata Motors and Lionel Messi. There is no comparison between the two at all. Zica must not get sidelined by the spread of Zika. Maybe the positive energies created by Zica would be able to get Zika overpowered by science and technology soon.

If we see some recent conflicting names  the first set that comes to my mind is Obama and Osama. One is the great President of the United States Barack Obama. But he never tried to change his name because of the most notorious terrorist Osama Bin Laden. It is the deeds and quality that make you great whatever name you carry. Once Zica has been decided as the name for this revolutionary car from Tata Motors, they should stick to it, in my opinion. There should not be any impact of Zika on Zica.

Recently there was an interesting incident. The incident is about how technology helped two friends meet at an unknown place. It is about the picture navigation feature in my car's navigation system. I went to Udaipur by my car. A friend of mine also was there. He had come from Mumbai. He was already staying there for the last couple of days. We planned to meet as soon as I enter the city. His name is Suresh. He is not very conversant with routes and locations. We are friends for last two decades. He is my childhood friend. We both were in the same school. We took the same subjects. Science was our favourite subject. He did his graduation in electronics and then joined a firm in Mumbai. I did my computer science and then master degree in business administration. And then I started my journey as a technology guy. We both used to communicate regularly. Both of us were excelling well in our career and were happy about it. Suresh got married and has two children. I am about to tell about the picture navigation feature in my car’s navigation system.

Suresh is a simple person. That is probably the reason of our friendship. He never boasts about whatever he achieved in life. He is a big fan of new cars. Every year or at the most every alternative year he would buy a new car. He is quite savvy about the new features in a car. Before I started from my home for Udaipur I told Suresh to extend his vacation there. After all, after many years, we were getting a chance to meet in person. In this era of video chats and WhatsApp although we never miss to talk to each other on a daily basis but still a personal meeting and remembering those old days is always a blessing.

I told Suresh I would be reaching Udaipur by evening. I was driving my own car. As I was about to enter the city, I called him and asked him where would we be meeting. He was sitting in a café but was not sure about its whereabouts. Even asking from the staff did not help much about getting the accurate route. I told him to send me the complete address that he didn’t know. His Hindi has deteriorated in last few years. He has picked up Marathi well, though. The local guys were not able to tell him the complete address in Marathi or English.

I told Suresh to just take a good snap of the location and send it to me. In next few moments, the location’s snap and a good picture of the café was there. I fed it in my car’s navigation system and then it picked it up well. The strong navigation system of my car drove me accurately to the destination without much trouble. Soon we were sitting together, sipping coffee, having snacks and remembering our old golden days. Thanks to the picture navigation feature embedded in my car’s navigation system that helped.

How accurately it picks the real-time situations to enhance the accuracy factor? Answers to these questions must be clearly available from the manufacturer.

When we talk about 5 features of car music system what comes to my mind instantly is certain features like Bluetooth audio, easy control like the placement of control buttons on steering, USB port, voice recognition, and NFC authentication. Though there would be many more. Every person would have a separate choice based on the priorities and likings. It would like to explain these features below and also would discuss why I feel them important to have.

NFC Authentication: NFC is nothing but near field communication. NFC feature enables your device to communicate with other devices. An NFC-enabled device can act as a reader. It can also be read by other devices. This handshaking happens in a close proximity. The music system can handshake with my smartphone via NFC to enable communication. NFC can intelligently record an incident. It can also raise an alert or alarm in case of any incident.

Voice Recognition: I would prefer to have a system that recognizes my voice. In fact, at times, I would prefer it to act as my personal assistant (PA). It must talk to me when I am driving alone and don't want to listen to music, it must talk to me. The talk may be on the latest news, current affairs or any other subject of choice. When I want to play music, it must understand through voice and play the directed number. Voice recognition system can act as an authentication system also. There can be an authentication process in the system. In the case of any discrepancy, the system can raise an alert to the pre-defined numbers. It can act as a powerful safety and security tool.

USB Port: The music system in my car must have USB 2,0 and USB 3.0 ports. I must be able to connect my devices with the system to transfer data from any other device to the music system storage or from music system storage to the connected device. I must also be able to play numbers stored in the connected USB device. There are instances when on the move you get some useful music collection from a friend. The port becomes handy in such moments. You can just copy the stuff to your local storage from friend's USB device.

Bluetooth Audio: The system must pair with my smartphones automatically. While driving, the calls must come to the system directly and I must be able to communicate via its speakers. An easy pairing process can act as a safety system also. In fact, when I sit in the car and my smartphone does not pair with the system for any reason, it must raise an alert.

Easy Control: The steering must have volume and channel controls so that I can easily and comfortably control my music system. It also enhances safety while driving.

I am discussing features of a peppy car. A peppy car has to be a class apart from other variants in the market so as to stay apart and keep its presence felt. Whether a car needs to be trendy, classy, stylish or it needs to be high-tech, nerd and intelligent. meaning and expectations may vary from person to person. Some might require it to be having the features mentioned formerly. Others might expect the latter. And on top of it, there would a set of people who would demand both sides. Let me tell you what 5 features of a peppy car I would anticipate it to possess.

Ding Dong O Baby Sing a Song: The car has to be super intelligent. It must be able to read my mood and play songs accordingly. If it is a rainy day and I am sad, it must play some ghazals. I would also love to have a peppy car if it is able to suggest singers and numbers. Can there be an alignment between a car and its owner of such sort?

Jahan Teri Ye Nazar Hai Meri Jaan Mujhe Khabar Hai: If my car is able to know me to such an extent that it reads my mind about the destination. Not only that, if it is able to know whether I am clear about the route or I need some assistance. Even if I am clear about the route and there is some trouble on the route, it must alarm me. It must proactively indicate the traffic chaos en route.

Jab Jab Bahar Aayi Aur Phool Muskuraye, Mujhe Tum Yaad Aaye: My intelligent car has to remember the important dates of my friends and family members. It must tell me in advance about upcoming birthdays and anniversaries. Not only that, it must be able to suggest which friend would like what kind of gift.

It must tell me my day's schedule in the morning, Once I accept it, it must ensure that I adhere to the planned meetings and other schedules.

Rote Rote Hasna Seekho, Rote Rote Hasna, Jitni Chaabi Bhari Ram Ne Utna Chale Khilona: My smart baby must take care of my health. It must help me in consuming and burining right amount of calories, If intake of calories is going beyond the permissible levels, it must give a strict warning to me in this regard.
