This year's 82nd Oscar ceremony was one full of surprises, breaking with tradition by starting the show with the formal introduction of the 10 nominees in the best actor and actress categories.
Kathryn Bigelow made Oscar history by becoming the first woman to win the directing award, receiving a standing ovation from the A-list crowd. “I hope I am the first of many” said Bigelow whose past films include K-19: the Widowmaker in 2002, and Point Break in 1991. She returned to the stage moments later when the movie The Hurt Locker was named best film. At a cost of $11 million to make, it trumped her ex-husband’s movie Avatar that had a budget close to $400 million.
The Hurt Locker is the lowest grossing film to win best picture, bringing in a mere $14.7 million, compared to the whopping $1.4 billion brought in by Avatar. In all, The Hurt Locker came out with six awards, including Original Screenplay, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, and the top prizes, Best Director and Best Picture. A true triumph for a movie considered by many to be the underdog.
Avatar was the underachiever of the night, receiving only three Oscars and none in the biggest categories, (Visual Effects, Cinematography and Art Direction.) Sandra Bullock received the Best Actress award, Jeff Bridges won Best Actor, Christophe Waltz received the Best Supporting Actor, and Mo’Nique won the Best Supporting Actress prize.
Actor Neil Patrick Harris began the show with a song and dance routine to the delight of all, with hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin making their appearance by descending from the ceiling of the Kodak Theater in a mechanical platform surrounded by angels. They entertained the star-studded audience by cracking jokes and introducing other nominated stars within the audience. Receiving special attention from the pair was Meryl Streep, a two-time winner, who has been nominated a total of 16 times. As Steve Martin quipped "Meryl Streep holds the record for the most nominations, or should I say, the most losses”.
