Asian Games 2010: Women Not Far Behind Men In Grabbing Medals For India

After displaying a game of guts by Indian boxers in men’s section on Wednesday at Zhengzhou, China in ongoing Asian Games, it was now the turn of women section to add up to the total tally of medals for India.

First it was Suranjoy Singh who grabbed a bronze in 50 kg men’s boxing section.

Then it was Vikas Krishnan who with the help of his extra ordinary performance reached finals of the 61 kgs category of men’s boxing ensuring at least a silver medal for India.

In women’s section, Indian boxer Kavita Goyat brought in a bronze medal for India in women’s boxing 75 kg category played at Foshan Gymnasium.

Kavita though gave a tough fight to Jinzi Li of China in semi finals but failed to defeat her.

In first round Kavita was able to open her account but shortly Jinzi grabbed three points taking score in her favour by 3-1 at the end of first round.

In next two rounds it was fruitless for both the opponents as neither of them could score a point.

It was only in the final two minutes that Jinzi came into action by taking two points and ultimately winning the game. Jinzi was cheered by her fans and home crowd throughout the game.

The hopes are alive on Indian woman boxer M C Mary Kom who has been five times world champion.

Mary Kom will be playing in the semi finals against China’s Cancan Ren in women’s boxing 51 kg category.
