Author Interview: Nathan Robinson: Slightly Manic But Organise Chaos Well @natthewriter

Nathan Robinson is a horror writer living in Scunthorpe, England. He’s married with two monsters. As well as writing, he regularly reviews indie horror fiction for www.snakebitehorror.co.uk supporting up and coming horror talent. His debut novel 'Starers' was released to rave reviews. His short story collection was released in August 2013 containing 13 tales of terror and intrigue.

Your real name and pen name?
I haven’t got a pen name, I tend to go by Nathan Robinson. If I had a pen name I wouldn’t want anyone to find out.

Please share some of the best memories of your childhood
Definitely holidays with my family and the adventures we got up to. Pretty much every year we went to a little village in the Yorkshire Dales called Malham. We’d climb up through a collapsed cave system that has turned into a waterfall called Gordale Scar and head over the top of the moors and swim in a lake on the summit. We’d camp and pick wild garlic to garnish our breakfast. It’s one of my favourite places and I love going back. It’s a place of mystic beauty and adventure.

About your education
I suffered a traditional English education at a comprehensive school where the teachers spent more time dealing with those that chose to disrupt rather than learn. I was lumped in a few of the lower sets because of mild dyslexia and didn’t receive the education I wanted. If I could get a refund I would.

What career did you plan during your education
I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but I’ve also dabbled with the idea of becoming an astronaut and a film maker.

What is your biggest source of inspiration in life.
My children. They equally terrify and delight me every day. I worry about what harm could come to them and this is my only true fear. I’ve stopped reading newspapers as there’s far too many ideas in them for a writer. I’ve got enough ideas at the moment to last me ten books.
What hurts you most in this world
Cruelty to children and animals. And my favourite TV shows ending.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced? Were you able to overcome it? How?
To be honest, I enjoy challenges. To be challenged is to prove your worth. And if you fail it doesn’t matter; at least you tried. I’ve climbed mountains, swam with sharks and walked on hot coals, the hardest thing I’ve ever done is becoming a father. Early on, it’s a tiring slog, never ending and with little reward aside from giggles and vomit. You learn to accept that it’ll get better and easier. Which it does. You just have to learn how to cope. Being a parent evolves you into a higher being.

If you had to live a day of your life as one of the living or dead personality, who would it be and why?
Hunter S Thompson, because he makes crazy seem fun.

What is your favorite genre and why?
I’d have to say horror; possibly sliding towards thrillers.

What is the purpose of your writing?
Because it’s therapeutic. If I didn’t write I couldn’t imagine what kind of person I’d be. My head would explode from the pressure of ideas.

Which of your work published so far?
My first novel ‘Starers’ was published by Severed Press last year. It’s a anti-thesis to the traditional zombie novel and has been well received by readers and critics alike. I’ve just published a collection of thirteen of my short stories called ‘Devil Let Me Go,’ in which I did all of the artwork myself. Before this I’ve been published in numerous anthologies and on many websites including, Knightwatch Press, Rainstorm Press, Pseudopod and eight monthly winners on www.spinetinglers.co.uk and many more.

What are your forthcoming writings?
More short stories, a few collaborations, a sequel to ‘Starers’, another short story collection, an alien invasion novel. The list goes on.
What are your future plans?
Write and breathe. And a caravan holiday in Cleethorpes.

What four top most things you take care of while writing a book?
Sometimes I write whilst drinking so I think it’s important to re-read, re-read, re-read. I spend more time re-reading what I’ve written than I spend actually writing it. Some writers do outlines, but I don’t tend to bother, I’ll have maybe a page of character names so I don’t forget and few little bits I want to add later. Aside from that, carry a notebook in case you overhear something interesting and don’t want to forget it. And when you re-read you work, try to imagine yourself as the reader reading it for the first time round. What would they look for?

Your dream destination on Earth?
Hawaii. And I’ve already been there on my honeymoon. I felt like crying when I left. It was too beautiful.

Your origin of birth and other countries you have visited/ stayed. What best things you liked in these countries around the globe?
I was born in Scunthorpe and I’ve pretty much lived here all my life. With my day job I travel around the country a lot, so I’ve seen most of my own country. I’ve been to the USA a few times which is great for the food, Africa has some of the most beautiful, kind and caring people I’ve come across, Cuba felt dangerous, but I’d love to go back to them all. I’m keen to visit Australia next and hopefully get to go to Antarctica before it melts.

Your favorite time of the day?
I’m usually up before dawn for work. I love seeing the day being born. The light seems to vibrate with expectation.

Your zodiac/ sunsign?
I’m a typical Virgo. Slightly manic but I organise my chaos well.

Your favorite color and why?
I tend to wear a lot of blue. I think it suits me.
Your favorite book and why?
I’m quite fond of The Rum Diary by Hunter S Thompson. But I tend to re-read children’s books a lot to my kids. It’s The Iron Man by Ted Hughes at the moment. Fifth time through.

Your favorite celebrity and why?
Celebrities without qualification should be shot. I follow Stephen Fry on Twitter. Professor Brian Cox is interesting. I quite fancy Professor Alice Roberts.

Your favorite food?
Is beer a food?

Author Interview: Jennifer Slater: Dark Clouds Silver Linings @JenniferSlater3

Please share some of the best memories of your childhood: My childhood was filled with many happy moments, but some of my best memories are centered around the holidays (as it is with most children). One of my favorite holidays was Easter in my native country of Guyana, in South America.  I remember the excitement of waking up on Easter Sunday and waiting for my father to put the finishing touches to the kites that he so lovingly crafted for us. You see, kite flying was a major event in our country during Easter and my dad's kites were things of beauty.  The month of May also holds special memories for me. I attended a Catholic primary school and this was the month we honored the Virgin Mary with a school pageant that culminated with the crowning of the statute of Mary. I was selected to be in the pageant one year and it is a memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life. My fondest memories, not surprisingly, are of the Christmas  holidays and I remember that particular time of year as having a very distinct, pleasant smell - the delicious aroma of my mother's Pepper Pot and Garlic Pork (two Guyanese dishes that she prepared each year), combined with the fragrant scent of our pine Christmas tree and the smell of our newly lacquered living room floor.
About your education: I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Hofstra University in New York. They say that college is the best 4 years of your life ... well they weren't lying. I thoroughly enjoyed my undergraduate college experience, but had no interest in furthering my education on a graduate degree level.
What career did you plan during your education days: I vacillated between wanting to be a teacher and wanting to be a writer. I guess that I should have become a Creative Writing teacher and then I could've had the best of both worlds. I'm so glad that I am finally realizing my dream of being a writer.
What is your biggest source of inspiration in life: Not so much a what, but a who ... and that person is my mother! She is one of the strongest, most admirable women I know. My dad became ill shortly after our arrival to this country, and the task of helping us to get acclimated fell to my mother. This was no easy task for a mother of nine children, but she succeeded, and even managed to put some of us through college. She sacrificed a lot to keep our family afloat, with very little money or help. She taught me to never give up, even when times are hard, and I will always be grateful to her for that.
What hurts you most in this world: Senseless acts of violence. I will never understand how people could willfully and maliciously hurt or kill others. It saddens me that we are hearing about more and more of these acts, almost on a weekly basis.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced? Were you able to overcome it? How? Shyness as a child was probably my biggest challenge. I dreaded meeting new people and was terrified of having to give any kind of oral reports in class. I didn't like being in the spotlight and preferred reading books to talking to people. I was able to overcome this sometimes crippling fear when I was in college. I chose to live in a dorm and that experience forced me out of my comfort zone as I had to share a living space with people who were strangers in the beginning, but who became friends in the end.

What is your favorite genre and why? Currently it is contemporary fiction/romance. I love reading stories about everyday people, about the many facets of human nature, about complex relationships/love and especially stories that raise social awareness.

What is the purpose of your writing? I write because for me writing is therapeutic. It provides me with an outlet for my stress and gives me something to do when I find myself twiddling my thumbs. Most importantly, I write because I hope that my readers can find something inspiring, comforting or encouraging from my books.

Which of your work published so far? I have published 2 novels so far - "A Time for Us," and "Dark Clouds, Silver Linings". The first is a romance novel about second chances and the second is a contemporary novel about friendships, with a romance theme woven in.
What are your forthcoming writings? I'm working on my 3rd book now which is about two friends whose friendship is tested when they both fall for the same guy. After that one is finished, I hope to try my hand at writing a western, with a romantic twist of course.
What are your future plans? To keep writing, with the hopes that one or several of my books will become international best sellers.

What four top most things you take care of while writing a book? 1.) Being a hopeless romantic, my books have to have the requisite happy endings. I want to leave my readers with a warm and fuzzy feeling at the end. 2.) My characters have to be relatable. Even though they are flawed and have to overcome obstacles, I want my readers to be able to connect with them and to root for them when they are facing their demons. 3.) My novels aren't strictly romantic in nature. I explore other themes in my stories to keep them interesting and I try to keep my plots twisting and turning a bit so that they aren't predictable. 4.) My books have strong female leads. I want my readers, especially young women, to feel inspired, empowered or enlightened after reading them.

Your dream destination on Earth? Any tropical island.  The salty, tangy smell of the ocean, soft sea breezes wafting through an open window, warm sand between my toes and the sound of the surf pounding the shore - ah, paradise!

Your origin of birth and other countries you have visited/ stayed. I was born in Guyana, South America where I lived until I was almost 14 years old before my family migrated to the United States. I 've been lucky enough to have visited Brazil, Barbados, Trinidad, England and France.
What best things you liked in these countries around the globe? I loved the warmth and friendliness of the Caribbean people, the beauty of the West Indian islands and their wonderfully delicious food. I loved the stores in London, the night life, and the politeness of the people. I loved the Brazilian culture - the language, the music and the people. As for France, I only visited the coastal town of Calais, but I loved its quaintness and relaxing atmosphere.
Your favorite time of the day? Evenings - that time of relaxation just after dinner - when you can unwind from a day at work and just enjoy being home. That's the time I like to do my writing.

Your zodiac/ sunsign? Gemini - The Twins

Your favorite color and why? Red. It's a vibrant color and I love bright colors.

Your favorite book and why? Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Not only is it very well written, entertaining and a literary classic, it gives us one of the most beloved heroines - Elizabeth Bennet. Not to mention a  hero, Mr. Darcy, with whom most female readers can still fall in love with today.

Your favorite celebrity and why? Bob Marley. I grew up listening to his music and I admire his work. He not only made Reggae music popular worldwide, but the songs that he sang were inspirational and spiritual, and they resonated with me. He may be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten.
Your favorite food? Hmmm, so many to choose from ... I would have to say Indian food - Curry, Roti, Dahl, Tandoori ... love the spices and the flavors.

Author Interview: Joy York: The Bloody Shoe Affair @JoyYorkAuthor

Joy York grew up in Alabama. She is a graduate of Auburn University. She had a rewarding career in retail management. She was an active volunteer in her community, holding positions on nonprofit boards supporting education, including an elected four- year term on the Hudson City School Board of Education in Hudson, Ohio. She was inspired to write when she began creating stories to entertain her young son. Although the story and characters are fictitious, The Bloody Shoe Affair was inspired by Joy’s childhood visits to see her cousin in rural Alabama who was the daughter of the county jailer. Joy now follows her passion of writing fulltime.

Your real name and pen name?
My legal name is Joy Shelton-York. My pen name is Joy York which many people call me as well.

Please share some of the best memories of your childhood

Many of my best memories are visiting my grandparents on their farms in north Alabama. It was great to play with my cousins getting into mischief by annoying the pigs, chasing chickens, playing in the potato house and helping to round up cows. The wonderful southern food was another bonus. My mother got skipped on the southern cooking gene. My daddy would take me rabbit and quail hunting with him on the farm.

About your education?

I graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I received my BA is Sociology from Auburn University and a Minor in Communications.

What career did you plan during your education days?

I wanted to help people as a social worker when I was in school. I wanted to join the Peace Corp when I graduated, but was turned down because they were only taking people with technical degrees. Unable to find a job in social work, I looked at retail. Retail management was where I spent most of my career.

What languages can you speak and write?

English.

What is your biggest source of inspiration in life?

I believe there are several important people that inspire you through-out your life that come at different phases. My daddy was probably the one that had the biggest influence on my core values and the direction my life would take. Although he died in an accident when I was five years old, he instilled honesty, integrity, hard work, perseverance, and the importance of education and helping others. I think my first words may have been “War Eagle,” so I had to go to Auburn.  My Mother inspired independence, self-reliance, unconditional love, and to take risks for what you believe in.My husband, Terry, has inspired me to believe in myself and follow my dreams. My son, Collin, has inspired me to dream big. Spiritually, my faith in God has always sustained me.

What hurts you most in this world?

Seeing children suffer or not have opportunities to have the resources to have a healthy and happy life.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced? How did you overcome it?

Growing up without my daddy. We were very close and it totally upended our lives for years. My mother suffered with depression so it was extra hard on her to raise us alone. Thankfully, she had a good career as a Registered nurse.

If you had to live a day of your life as one of the living or dead personality, who would it be and why?

Leonardo Di Vinci It would be amazing to be in such a creative and intelligent mind for a day.

What is your favorite genre and why?

Mysteries and thrillers. I love the excitement and to try to figure them out.

When did you start writing? What is the purpose of your writing?

When my son was young, he loved me to tell him stories. I made up all kinds of fantasies and adventures.  As time went on, I began to write them down.  I discovered a love for writing.  I joined several national writing associations and local writing groups. I attended conferences, found resources to improve my skills, got lots of input from other writers and editors, and wrote about things I loved.

Which of your work has been published so far? Would you like to share a synopsis of your work?

The Bloody Shoe Affair: A daring and thrilling adventure with the jailer’s daughter is my first book. It is self-published. It is over ten years in the making because of my demanding career.

Summary:

In this mystery set in 1968, Christi, a shy and awkward teenager, never expected to get sucked into helping her cousin, Lily, the “double-dare-you” daughter of the county jailer,  try to solve the grizzliest murder the town of Roselyn, Mississippi, had ever seen. Then again, Christi had been entangled in her misadventures before. So a whirlwind week of spying, lying, crawling through tunnels and sneaking into the jail should have come as no surprise to Christi.

Lily, a vivacious prankster, loves adventure. It’s not hard to find when you live in a house connected to the jail. Christi, a city girl, is self-conscious and afraid of everything. Still, she’s drawn to the excitement and adventure that Lily always seems to provide. Christi arrives for a visit in time to help her cousin discover what happened the night Lily observed a county deputy drop a pair of women’s bloody shoes from a bag. After a chance meeting with the accused, they learn new information that sheds doubt on his guilt. Seeking justice, Lily sets a plan in motion that takes them on an adventure of risk and surprising twists. They not only discover unexpected truths about the case, but about themselves as well.

What are your forthcoming writings?

I am working on a sequel, The Jailer’s Daughter’s Revenge

What genres you write in and why?

This book is a historical Young Adult Mystery. I want to encourage young adults to be engaged and enjoy reading. Adventures and mysteries are things they don’t get to do themselves. The emotional issues teenagers face are timeless.

What keeps you motivating towards writing?

I love writing. You can create wonderful, colorful characters that begin to write themselves. The possibilities are endless.

If Writing a Book is taken as a project, What are the key essentials you take care of in Project Management?

Having been in management for years, I have taken on projects as large as opening a multi-million dollar store to developing a yearly budget. This is a totally different kind of project.

My book started with characters I loved and making sure they had clear voices. I had a story in mind and a setting that I was very familiar with. I wanted to have a well-developed plot with exciting twists and turns to engage my readers and keep them interested.  I didn’t start with an outline as many writers do. As I wrote, I made sure I stayed true to who my characters were and getting to the ending I had in mind. As I wrote, the ideas came, changed and they led me to the exciting ending I hoped. Many people have told me they felt like they were part of the story. That is amazing for me as a writer. My next book is a bit more systematic that the first.

How do you plan, schedule and monitor your writing commitments?

I get up in the morning and get ready for writing like I would if I had a normal job. I write all day. If I get stuck, I do research on details and update my social media. Sometimes I have to walk away and come back with a different perspective. I also seek feedback from other writers or an objective reader. The important thing for me is to stay consistent to a schedule.

What are your future plans?

To continue to write.

What is generally your preference in reading – a paper book or ebook? And why?

I read both, but I love the feel and smell of a paperback book.

What four top most things you take care of while writing a book?

Likeable characters with clear voices that the readers will root for
Exciting and well-developed plot
Engaging and entertaining story
Story that people can relate to

How much real life goes into a fiction writing?

This story was inspired by my relationship with my cousin who really was the county jailer’s daughter. It was also inspired by my real rural family and memorable events in my life.

Is a high level of imagination important to have for an Author?

I think imagination is very important. A story has so many directions it can go in. It takes creativity to see the possibilities and decide the best way to take your story.

Your dream destination on Earth?

England and Scotland. I’m really into genealogy.

Your origin of birth and other countries you have visited/ stayed. What best things you liked in these countries around the globe?

Polka Cakes Are Fantastic But Delivery In Time Is A Question Mark

The phone number mentioned on Zomato for Polka Rajouri Garden is wrong. It is a responsibility of both parties to get it corrected. More attention must be given by Zomato for verifying the contact numbers of all food outlets mentioned on their portal. This verification process must happen on a regular frequency.

Polka Bakery & Snack Bar in Rajouri Garden is a known place for cakes and pastries. The cakes are always fresh and there is never a question about the quality. Delivery commitments and timelines given online need a lot of improvement, especially during the peak times and high demand period. Like today I ordered two cakes at 4 pm and the delivery time committed was 6.30 pm. But it took many phone calls and almost two extra hours to get my stuff delivered at home.

#ComeCloser To Glow And Radiance

The skin is a valuable sense organ, which was gifted to us by God Almighty along with the four other senses of vision, hearing, taste and smell. More so, it is the most overlooked sense too. After all, our skin is the one sense organ which is always taken for granted and it is the same skin which bears the brunt of so many harmful environmental factors like pollution, dust, smoke, and even the harshness of the sun.

It is thus of utmost importance that we, as humans shift our focus to the upkeep of the radiance and well-being of our skin. Our skin too, deserves proper care, so that we can enjoy the fruits of its vitality even after we embrace old age or senility.

Everyone wishes for radiant skin, be it woman or man. Some people are blessed with naturally glowing skin which does not require much care but others with excessively oily or dry skin need to put in a lot of effort. It is usually women who end up spending a lot of time, effort and money to gain and retain radiant skin. They don't mind spending hours in the parlour and lots of money to get various treatments done. What they fail to understand is the fact that all these chemically administered treatments do not last long and hence they get trapped in this vicious circle of mere facades.

Actually, what everyone needs is the natural care. Our mothers and aunts used to rely wholly on natural remedies like the use of मुल्तानी  मिटटी, बेसन, turmeric, rose water etc. since ages. Lots of water intake, a nutritious diet regime and hard physical work also added to the radiance as all of it increases blood circulation which plays a major role in sustaining the glow of one's skin.

But, in today's time, women are busy professionally and hence rely on ready-made creams, which end up in their skin being harmed by harsh chemical compositions. It is good news that some companies like Vicco have taken initiative to revive our natural remedies. Now, people have the option of procuring home remedies in ready-made tubes. VICCO Turmeric Cream and Sandalwood Paste claim to have been constituted of Ayurvedic essentials, while shying away from chemical compositions.

Nonetheless, it is said that we must not trust any product blindly. Though there exists a certain brand value associated with each firm and their products. So, when it comes to brands which have established their foothold in a particular market, there also comes bundled with it, a trust factor. That trust factor stems from the trial and testing of the said products by the targeted clientele.

It is a similar story for brands like Vicco. It has established itself here in India since so many decades that there is an inherent trust and reliability whenever its name finds a mention. Thus, there is not a trace of reluctance when someone recommends Vicco's products to somebody.
